My interest in architectural vistas began on a visit to Pompeii several years ago. The relics of the once bustling town bear witness to the rhythm of lives once lived; an urban district now become a place of memorial; a space for reflection. At the same time, though, the skeletal framework of remains speaks of human device and mode very similar to ours today - an urban built-up area with juxtaposition of form and function; of intelligent engineering and human foible; of perceived durability and stability with its counter-wise and ultimate fragility. Later work looks at the vitality in contemporary urban life, where planners with very differing backgrounds and outlooks try to make sense of the humungous mix of human activity: Residential and commercial spaces slotted together side by side. Public and private lives lived within a whisker's breadth of one another; then a different city springing to life on the self-same footprint following the daily commuter outflow to the suburbs. My latest work is an effort to record and meld together personal visual snapshots of the changing countryside environment. Time spent in the beautiful Ribble Valley brings with it an acute awareness of the changing seasons and I am working on a new series of paintings, shaping the essence of the colours and forms around me using a wide range of media. tel: 01200 442213 email:
