New Form Arts Members Galleries Norman KellyNorman raises calligraphy to the art form it truly is and, among other things, has been commissioned to create a series of maps and guides for Ribble Valley walks.
"I enjoy the medium of calligraphy because it can be applied in many different ways. From the traditional use of lettering that has spanned thousands of years, to moulding the letterforms to create a more expressive and colourful mood.
"I had long been interested in calligraphy and when I settled in the Ribble Valley I took it up as a serious pursuit. Through membership of the East Lancashire Calligraphers' Guild I acquired new techniques and applications. I was also encouraged to exhibit works and demonstrate calligraphy. This led to an association with the Platform gallery where I have successfully exhibited and through whom I have obtained commissions". These include the RVAA logo (see below).
"My style has changed over time and I have experimented with writing longer poems in book form. This overcomes the problems of limiting the amount of text used when doing a piece for hanging. Not only is this a satisfying process but it also takes the art back to its origins - producing hand written books.
"I am always surprised that Calligraphy does not feature as much as it deserves in wall hung art.
I feel that its versatility lends it to a wider audience, and it is my aim to promote calligraphy
as an equal to paintings, prints and photographs."
